At Altadore we offer a comprehensive activities programme designed to enhance the quality and enjoyments of our residents’ lives. The activities aim to engage them socially and cognitively, physically and creatively, as well as spiritually.

The programme remains flexible in consideration of the differing and changing capacities and interests of the residents. Niamh Kelly has overall responsibility for organising and implementing morning and afternoon group activities for residents.

Other members of the activities team include Mary O’Reilly, Carmel McAllister, Billy Gallagher and Ann Healy. We also have a weekly visit from Pet Therapy dogs Holly and Finn and our hairdresser Josephine Cox attends two mornings per week.

Group activities include crosswords, proverb memory games and quizzes as well as reminiscence sessions and newspaper reading and discussion. There are also regular sing along and piano tunes sessions, bingo and musical bingo, art and crafts sessions, as well as poetry and music appreciation.

Residents are encouraged to participate in physical exercises within their range of capability, and physical movement is regularly incorporated into our activities. In addition, we offer Sonas aPc, a multisensory programme designed to meet the needs of residents with dementia.

The spirituality of our residents is engaged through weekly spirituality sessions and group meditation. Religious services include monthly Mass and weekly Minister of the Eucharist as well as a monthly Church of Ireland service which all our Protestant residents are invited to attend.

Individual activities include engaging residents in conversation about their interests, reminiscences and memories and walking is encouraged, with assistance as necessary. Therapeutic hand massage is also offered and holistic pastoral care is available to residents who wish to engage the spiritual dimension of their lives.

We encourage residents with dementia through orientation and reassurance, and in multisensory engagement with hand massage and simple stretching exercises. A relaxing massage and music experience is offered through Sonas aPc individual sessions, and engagement is further stimulated through familiar songs, proverbs and poems.
