About Us

Altadore Retirement Nursing Home was established in 1990 to look after the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of its residents. With the help of all our staff, it is our aim to provide a high standard of person centred care.

Emphasis is placed on comfort and tranquillity and while residents are invited to participate in our ongoing activities, their privacy and wishes are respected at all times. Altadore takes pride in the excellent standard of food served and the choices made available to our residents daily.

We source from local Irish suppliers and our meals are imaginatively planned with special dietary needs catered for.

The original house is a beautiful Portuguese style villa which was internally redesigned, extended and is now been refurbished to a high standard specifically to meet the needs of our residents.

Our facility is set on an acre of grounds in a quiet enclave off Upper Glenageary Road. We are situated beside the flagship "Ailt an Oir" sheltered housing complex for older people, established by the Dublin Central Mission, and we are across the road from Rathdown Girls School.

We are a 10 minute walk from Glenageary DART station and a short drive to the seafronts of Dunlaoghaire or Sandycove. Our area has plenty of community facilities – churches, libraries, post office etc.

Activities

At Altadore we offer a comprehensive activities programme designed to enhance the quality and enjoyments of our residents’ lives. The activities aim to engage them socially and cognitively, physically and creatively, as well as spiritually.

The programme remains flexible in consideration of the differing and changing capacities and interests of the residents. Residents are encouraged to participate in physical exercises within their range of capability, and physical movement is regularly incorporated into our activities.

We also have a weekly visit from Pet Therapy dogs Holly and Finn and our hairdresser Josephine Cox attends two mornings per week. Group activities include crosswords, proverb memory games and quizzes.

Facilities

In 2013-2015 we undertook an extension and redevelopment of our facility in order to fully meet and exceed the new standards for residential care settings in Ireland, as set out by HIQA.

We built a new extension to our existing facility to encompass a new entrance foyer and reception area, a new dining room, a new main activity room and secure garden area, new sitting rooms and outdoor terraces and 26 new ensuite bedrooms plus back of house facilities at basement level.

Our new building opened in early 2015 and we are currently undergoing a full refurbishment of our existing facility to the same standard. The end of this process will see Altadore providing approximately 56 ensuite bedrooms a number of which could accommodate couples.
